The charge up San Juan Hill made Roosevelt, along with Admiral Dewey of Navy who experienced great success in the Philippines, the heroes of the war and thrust TR into the national spotlight.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier

This statue of Roosevelt is located on Theodore Roosevelt Island, a small island located in the Potomac River just west of downtown Washington.  The island memorial, which doubles as a bit of a bird sanctuary in the city,  was dedicated to Roosevelt and his enthusiasm for the outdoors.  Nature trails can be found on the small island.
